“I don’t know how you ever leave this place. The view is absolutely gorgeous. How can we not write amazing music with this for inspiration?” Awe dripped from Catalina’s words, and a pleased warmth stole over Patricio.

She’d been quiet and standoffish the entire flight to Puerto Vallarta, treating him to more of the same in his Range Rover on the drive to his oceanfront property. Either still pissed at him for his boorish behavior or hungover from partying last night. Or both.

But the moment the foliage flanking each side of the private road leading to his beach house cleared and his home came into view, her mood brightened with her murmured “Wow!”

Now he followed her gaze past the wide infinity pool off the back deck to the calm Bahía de Banderas just beyond and the watercolor sunset spanning the sky above the bay. Early-flowering trees stretched their gnarly branches, adding shades of green, pink, and red to the picturesque panorama. Bordering the pool and spa area, colorful clusters of lantana invited butterflies to stop and linger.

His private property extended for acres in either direction, but one of his favorite spots lay at the end of the stone path that carved its way through the tropical foliage, ending at a thatched-roof hut that jutted out over the rocks and sandy beach below. A spectacular place to relax and soak up the peace of Mother Nature’s eye-catching atardecer sinking into the bay waters.

Few things in life were more perfect than the sunset over the ocean, a smooth tequila in one hand and a partner you could trust clasping the other. He had yet to find the latter, but the tequila tasted better with this view.

The breeze shifted, catching a lock of hair that had slipped loose from Catalina’s low ponytail. It blew across her face to snag on her glossy lips. Without thinking, he lifted a hand to tuck the silky lock behind her ear. She beat him to it—saving him from a misstep—crooking a finger to deal with the errant strands, all the while keeping her gaze on the sun’s artful display on the horizon.

Patricio had seen the view a million times before. But sharing it with her now felt . . . different. A little more breathtaking. More awe-inspiring. Though he couldn’t bring himself to examine why or what that might mean.

His goals over the next few days entailed muse reviving, songwriting, soft pitching Catalina’s own idea to write for other Padua artists, and keeping her resolutely in the friend zone.

“Ay, what my sisters would give to be here right now,” she murmured.

He figured she might be missing her close-knit familia and started to ask how she was holding up with the separation. Instead, he drew back in surprise when her soft sigh turned into a chuckle that morphed into a cackle of evil laughter.

“They are going to be green with envy. And I am gonna love rubbing it in!” Arms lifted to bounce in a raise-the-roof motion, Catalina happy danced around him, coming dangerously close to the edge of the pool.
